You get your money’s worth this episode as Dr. Scott Blumenthal and Dr. Brad Bellard join Dr. T.O. Souryal for an entire episode of your favorite sports medicine radio show for the same price! Free, that is. Of course, they don’t keep strictly to sports and medicine… they might talk about date night, or p’s and q’s, news from the CDC, chronic pain management, black swans and white swans, skiing and skating, locker room talk and so on. They may digress, but in a completely informative and entertaining way.

Our first caller has continued back pain and asks whether it may be connected to his already-diagnosed degenerative disc disease. A 64 year old wonders what to do about sciatica that keeps him awake too much. The popular, and uncomfortable, Business of Medicine segment covers some disturbing trends. Then a hockey player has a deep contusion on one thigh, but the other knee swelled up. Another caller asks about the difference between anabolic steroids and cortisone shots in a joint, and a weekend warrior pulled a hamstring. How fast can he get back in the game and will compression shorts or sleeves really do the trick? An umpire took a fastball to his knuckle and remains bruised and swollen. Three docs, expert advice. ‘Nuf said.

Spine authority Dr. Scott Blumenthal joins Dr. Souryal to talk of homecomings, tailgating, turf, knees, necks, and backs, too.

Discussions range from the difference between a crick and a pinched nerve to why the pain in a herniated disc may come and go, the difference between mechanical and medical problems, and what an X-ray can and cannot show.

Callers include a a little league coach with a sudden shoulder pain, a hiker who broke her ankle in Hawaii, a runner/biker with a numb foot, a golfer with shoulder trouble, and so many more. An active five year old had a rare PCL injury on a trampoline and her parents wonder if there are new surgical options that may stabilize her knee without requiring her to wear a brace for years. The show ends on a high note with a call about arthritis and a miracle pill.

08/15/15 #542: Rehab is Vital

Our first caller is recovering from a run-in, or a run-over, with a steer and asks for ideas to speed up his return to mobility. PT specialist Dr. Craig Garrison joins the good Dr. Souryal in the first hour and explains some current practical methods trainers use from weigh-ins to check hydration levels in athletes to “dry needling” and trendy acupuncture. In the Business of Medicine segment, the doctors discuss physical therapy and insurance limitations, efficiency, and value.

Must we mention urine? Yes, indeed! Sports medicine specialist Dr. Brad Bellard comes on in the second hour to advise how to get the most out of PT sessions and help answer callers’ questions. A concerned wife describes her husband’s hip injury and arthritis and wonders if his fall made his arthritis worse or if PT may be making his injury worse. A 42 year old wants to work but his severe back pain and degenerative disease holds him back. Dr. Souryal assures him that he is doing all the right things but needs a clear diagnosis to get on track. A young weightlifter has a “textbook” shoulder pain, a motocross racer asks about an old spinal injury that still causes problems, and a runner has achilles trouble.

In Souryal Stories, Dr. Souryal tells the tale of a young athlete who left a promising sports career for medical reasons a decade ago, but finds increasing success as a country musician.

The switchboard is lit up! Dr. Souryal answers all the questions he can in two hours. A runner with a labral tear has questions about her ambiguous diagnosis and treatment plan. Long after being thrown from a horse, a listener with a radial head fracture has concerns about his limited range of motion. An active 63 year old considers whether surgery is a good option for his bicep rupture.
